Title: dryer exhaust vent distance from ground and surrounding windows and doors
Post by: ck_chino on June 10, 2018, 11:21:31 PM
Hey guys

Just bought a house last year in the Greater Toronto Area and builder is giving me a hard time with regards to a dryer exhaust vent.  What is the code for this??  Is there a min height off the ground?  Is there a min distance from windows and doors?  does it matter if its gas or electric?

The Building Code says,

Quote9.32.3.12. Outdoor Intake and Exhaust Openings
(6) The distance from the bottom of an exhaust outlet to finished ground level or to any nearer and lower permanent horizontal surface shall be not less than 100 mm. (4 inch)

The Gas Code would want a gas exhaust vent to be at least 12" above grade and kept at least 12" from any door or window that can be opened.

QuoteClause 8.14.8
A vent shall not terminate
(f) less than 1 ft (300 mm) above grade level;
(g) within the following distances of a window or door that can be opened in any building, of any nonmechanical air-supply inlet to any building, or of the combustion air inlet of any other appliance:
(ii) 12 in (300 mm) for inputs from 10 000 Btuh (3 kW) up to and including 100 000 Btuh (30 kW);

The dryer vent should also be kept 3 feet from any gas appliance intake vent and 6 feet from the HRV intake vent and 3 feet from the gas meter regulator.

Hey thanks for the reply.

Just to confirm this code would be effective for Ontario Canada? I just wanna make sure about this distance code for a gas dryer is 1 ft height off the ground and 1 foot distance from adjacent windows and doors as I keep reading this 3 ft rule from windows and doors...............would this be an american code?  Nonetheless I appreciate your help.  And Just to confirm that there is no such code for electric dryers??? please confirm

thanks

Yes, Ontario Canada.  There are no clearance codes to windows or doors for electric dryers.  An electric or gas dryer vent would need be kept 3' from any intake vent or gas meter regulator, and a gas dryer vent should not vent directly above a regulator unless it's at least 15' above.

A gas dryer requires 12" clearance from grade and 12" clearance from a window or door that can open.  Clause 8.14.8 requires 3' clearance from a gas vent only when the gas appliance exceeds 100,000 BTU's.  Your gas dryer is probably 30,000 BTU's.

Ask whoever you're dealing with to provide a Code, either Building or Gas.
