The management in our apartment-style condo has posted a notice saying that individual condos (not air conditioned) must not leave their entry doors ajar to get cooling from the building A/C which cools the hallways and other common areas of the building. Their claim is that if any suite doors are open, it affects the proper air balance of the building and will DAMAGE THE A/C UNIT.  I am not an HVAC expert, but I find their claim regarding damage under those conditions questionable. Are they telling the truth or not?     Thanks for your help.

The system they use to cool the common areas, is likely sized for those areas only.  The concern is probably with the increased load, should everyone leave their door ajar.  On the hot days, it would be hard on the system as it would run for long periods of time.  Like anything, the more it runs the sooner it will break down.  Management would also be paying higher hydro costs in this scenario.

Are you not allowed to install an air conditioner?  There are portable units that can be hidden easier than those window units that management may not allow.
