I have a question regarding duct rust in one and half year old home.
On the metal ductwork in my basement on the outside of the duct, I am seeing whitish deposits (I assume they are minerals?) and a few areas turn into brown color (besides the furnace filter on the return air duct).

- How can I remove those whitish deposits and brown color deposit(rust?)?
- also, how can I prevent this after removing those deposits?
- Is this covered by the new home warranty?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you have a lot of humidity in the basement.  Trying running a dehumidifier to remove the moisture.  Use a steel brush to clean the ductwork, maybe some CLR to help remove all the corrosion.  A new return elbow isin't that expensive, if it's badly damaged replace it.

You'll have to talk to your warranty company, and probably a laywer to figure out what's covered.
