Hello,
I want to ask few Questions to experienced Gas Tech guys.
1st Q? How important is to take the Certification Course for G3 Gas Tech at the college. If it is which college do you recommend in GTA. Please name few options.
Sec Q?
If one do not want to take the college program ....would it be possible to study your own and challenge the exam for G3?
where to start from? what is study guideline would be? I see some online Qs and As are they enough to memorize?
Please help as I have made up my mind to become a Gas Technician.(HVAC)
Thank you in advance and i look forward to hear from you all.
Regards,
Immy.
The courses mean nothing. It's all about obtaining the G3, and eventually the G2 license as fast as possible. It's only the TSSA license in your wallet that that matters. It's about preparing you for the exam to prove you may have enough brains to take on enough responsibility to work with gas without being a hazard to yourself and everyone else. No employers care about how you got it, they're more concerned with how you are and what you know when it comes down to actually working... Not a lot of employers care to teach either.
I'd recommend doing the co-op type courses through hi-mark since they're the fastest method to getting there. Even when you get a G2 after a G3, you're still short on being a true HVAC guy.
I wouldn't recommend trying to challenge the G3 exam, you can learn a lot taking that course, and there's a lot in the course to take in. But it is a short course. Definitely get the modules, and codebooks.
Employers like to see that you went to school over going hi-mark, not all of them care or even know the difference, but the ones I've dealt with have had snuffed there noses at hi-mark graduates, most employers just want to see a license. The feedback I hear about Hi-mark is they teach you the correct answers to the test, while going to school teaches you the reason why that is the correct answer on the test. big difference in my opinion and experiences so far.
Thank you for replying Porcupinepuffer.
This is what I hear about it that at the end all they care is that you have G3 and G2.
Would it be wise enough to get G3 my own since its more about safety related questions and answers and then for G2 go to HiMark?
Thank you Walker for Reply.
I heard about Hi-Mark and there is another option on the west side Stanford College in Mississauga which is kind a close to me (any suggestion about it?)

I have done both college course and himark. The himark course I took blew the college out of the water. There were many things that during my college experience I was still unclear on. After the first week of himark I had caught on to so much more. Also the amount of hands on training I got at himark was at least double of what the college offered.
Now this is just my experience but for me OD do himark over college without thinking twice
just curious of why you would do both. And what College did you go to, some are better than others.
Hi-Mark or college program has no difference in my opinion. All the employers want is a G2 or G3. Other than that, they can care less what school you went too. Personally, I've learnt more in the field than in school. But that's how I learn.
I took my G3 at georgian college, went there to get my G2 and had awful instructors, they didn't want to be there and we're just there to collect a cheque. I got 72 twice on the exam then messed up on the scantron on my 3rd attempt and got 40 something. Was told by TSSA that I had to redo the course and my employer at the time didn't want me gone for a year so went to high mark in cambridge instead. Took the course and got 93 on the exam.
