Title: Trade Limits of a G1/G2
Post by: 3450BB on December 29, 2015, 08:59:13 PM
Hello. While on an installation of a Cyclone Hot Water tank I was questioned by my new manager if I was permitted to make the plumbing connections and hydro to the tank without a plumber for the plumbing and electrician for the hydro. I explained that G1/G2 allows for it but he wants to see it in the code. I cant seem to find the code where its referenced. Are we as licenced techs seen as competent enough to make the connections of the other trades, therefore an unwritten rule?  Or are we allowed to make pluming and electrical connections and its written in B149? Thanks.

Download Ontario Regulation 215/01 - Here (http://www.hvactechgroup.com/article.php/20071111132902251)

In new construction only a plumber or electrician can install the new water lines and electrical.  If a G1 or G2 is replacing the equipment, they are allowed to make those connections.  In your case you can remove and reconnect the water lines if your replacing an existing water heater with the Cyclone.  Even if we were replacing a water heater with a tankless water heater, and relocating it to the exterior wall, it's generally accepted that a G1 and G2 can extend / modify the existing water lines.  A G1 and G2 can run a new wire from a branch circuit when installing a new appliance.  We are also allowed use the furnace circuit as per the Electrical Code Rule 26-806(3);

Quote26-806 Heating equipment rated 117 kW and less (see Appendix B)
(1) Except as permitted by Subrule (3), all electric power for the heating unit and associated equipment operating in connection with it shall be obtained from a single-branch circuit that shall be used for no other purpose.
(2) For the purpose of this Rule, circulating pumps and similar equipment need not be considered as associated equipment, provided that such equipment is not essential for the safe operation of the heating unit.
(3) Subrule (1) does not apply to a water heater using a gaseous fuel.

See O. Reg 215/01 Section 20(2)[3]and 20(2)[7];

Quote3.  Disconnect and reconnect water piping in order to exchange, service or install an approved appliance and carry out the replacement of water pipe necessary to complete the reconnection or installation of controls, control systems, components and accessories that are essential to the operation of the appliance, but the person shall not perform any additional plumbing unless he or she is the holder of a certificate of qualification in the trade of plumber or steamfitter, that is not suspended and that is issued under the Ontario College of Trades and Apprenticeship Act, 2009.

Quote7.  Install, repair, service and maintain electrical wiring from an existing branch circuit containing overcurrent protection to appliances in order to exchange, service, repair or install an approved appliance and carry out the replacement of electrical wiring necessary to complete the reconnection or installation of controls, control systems, components and accessories that are essential to the operation of the appliance, but the person shall not run wiring back to the electrical supply panel or perform any additional wiring unless he or she is the holder of a certificate of qualification in the trade of electrician — construction and maintenance or electrician — domestic and rural, that is not suspended and that is issued under the Ontario College of Trades and Apprenticeship Act, 2009.
