I'm not exactly sure what your working on but it sounds like a series circuit. If the timer is 120V just disconnect the wire going to one side of the contactor and connect it to the timer and then connect the second timer wire back to the contactor.
If it's a 24V timer do the same but wire the timer in series with one of the low voltage wires on the contactor.
I think the 313D exam has a similiar question about installing a timer when the AC is operating in an area with frequent power outages.
