I was under the impression that they give that certification out in participating boxes of kelloggs corn flakes.

That's not very nice. It's not like our licensing requirements are on par with Doctors and theoretical physicists. 

...I knew of several people from back when I did a lot of work with fireplaces. I never had it but remember these guys need to know the codes with clearances around chimneys, flashings, firestops, supports, etc... Combustibles clearance from floor openings of fireplace and hearth sizing. Proper chimney height for correct draft. Single wall and double wall pipe. Base T's. Using 2" insulated chimney with wood and never 1" insulated. All the safety related stuff you should know so someone's house doesn't burn to the ground

I don't have WETT certification but was helping a friend out with his cottage fireplace.  I noticed the fireplace manual had clearances to combustible material, and even if brick was covering the wood you had to maintain the clearances to the wood behind.  Definitely more stringent requirements than I'm used to seeing with gas appliances.

Im not chripping the trade, i just found it a very simple exam. The fact that your looking for additional resources online tells me your serious and wont have any issues passing the exam
