Title: Help - LENNOX EL296 w/S30 Stat. & VanEE 65HRV
Post by: Caker on October 20, 2019, 02:48:32 PM
Hi everyone, I am new to the industry and have a LENNOX EL296 w/ S30 stat. I am installing the VanEE 65HRV. I am having trouble understanding where to interlock the HRV to as the S30 stat does not have the standard stat contacts and does not tie into the traditional terminals on the furnace. Please help. Thanks.

Are you using a separate controller for the HRV?

Wire the HRV NO terminal to the furnace R terminal and C on the HRV to G on the furnace.

Thanks I will try that. Is that the R terminal of the furnace board connections where the S30 ties in or where a traditional stat would connect to? I was planning to install the lite touch bronze control in addition. Will this effect the operation? Thanks again.

Yes, R that a traditional thermostat uses.

The lite touch will work fine.

Hmm. That is pretty cool. You don't even need to hijack G wire with s30.  Having power going to G and having tstat calling for fan won't trip the fuse.  Never done that before. Pretty cool.

You can look up diagrams of the 2 wire and 3 wire ways of interlocking the furnace with the HRV. Keep in mind the C terminal on the HRV is a dry contact. It's not like the C terminal on the furnace board that carries the other side of the 24v power and can potentially blow a fuse if an error in the wiring is made.

It's just a relay that's internally powered by the HRV and you're only dealing with dry contacts normally open, normally closed, and C...

A lot of guys don't quite understand it very well and it leaves a lot of HRV's that will run in a useless matter without the furnace fan running.
The hrv controllers are usually pretty simple with specific instruction on where their wires go.

VanEE is saying it won't work with the AC and Heating interlock. Here is what LENNOX sent me. Which does not relate with the 65HRV wiring.

That looks like Lifebreath HRV wiring.  Do you have the Smart Hub 2.0?

If the S30 controls a HRV why are you using the lite touch control?  It looks to me like you can just wire the Vanee G and B terminals to the ACC1 terminals on the Smart Hub.  Then the interlock wiring is not required.  The S30 should start the furnace fan when the HRV starts.  There should be ventilation settings on the S30 is it's compatible and you may have to add the HRV in the setup.

With your S30 connected, if you jumper G and R on the conventional EL296 board terminals, does the furnace fan start and run?  I've used the S30 with a communicating furnace and non communicating AC and both sets of stat connections should work.

Look at Figure 58 in the EL296 manual.  It shows the interlock wiring as I described.

Don't listen to Vanee.  They want you using their controls and will tell you nothing else will work.  I don't know what they mean when they say AC and heating interlock.
