Title: Distance Between Multiple Exhaust Vents
Post by: Eric E on July 09, 2020, 10:27:45 AM
I am looking for advice on installing multiple exhaust vents in the same area.

I would like to install a dryer vent and Range Vent next to each other.
--What is the minimum horizontal distance they must be apart of next to each other?
--What is the minimum vertical distance they must be if installed one over the other?

Background: I am building a house in NY, the plans call to vent the dryer out the front of the house, and to vent the range hood out the roof which is right over my front door. I do not want to do this, or use a recirculating range hood. Due to the max effective length of both of these along with distances from windows and intakes, I have a very small area I can choose.

I am using Chapter 15 of the 2020 NYS residential code  https://up.codes/viewer/new_york/irc-2018/chapter/15/exhaust-systems#M1504.3 (https://up.codes/viewer/new_york/irc-2018/chapter/15/exhaust-systems#M1504.3), it is mostly following the 2018 IRC with some differences. It does not go over this.

Both are exhaust vents so there would be no issue installing them beside each other.

Just make sure if you do vent out of the soffit with the kitchen vent you don't use an open intake vent like a lot of people do. They sell a special soffit vent with a flap that will close when the range hood is not running that way if the dryer is on it won't circulate back into the house.

It sounds like you can vent both the dryer and stove out the wall so you should be able to use proper sidewall vents with flaps and not worry about recirculation.
