The AC tech I called out had no idea how to charge a multi-zone heat pump. I have my Universal EPA cert, a vacuum pump and micron gauge, a recovery tank, a digital refrigerant scale with valve auto-stop, and I am heading out now to buy a tank of R-410a. Given it's a mini-spit with inverter, I will evacuate to prep for weighing in the charge (allowing for total length of linesets). My question comes in if the charge must be calculated separately for each zone and charged separately, or can I load the system from one zone's charge port? I expect to charge without running the compressor - Is that OK? Also, I will install Flaretite seals to eliminate any leaks at the flare connections.
I am returning to NMSU HVAC curriculum in the fall, but need cooling now. Please advise as to steps.
Thanks,
George
What equipment are you using?
The outdoor unit should have a rating plate that tells you how much refrigerant came with the outdoor unit. Then the manual will tell us what to add for the additional line sets. Usually you weigh it in on those systems. I can try to find a manual if you know the model number.
