Title: Advice on getting started
Post by: Yeboaheu on December 20, 2021, 09:54:41 AM
30 year old male form Ontario. Just to clarify I have no prior experience in the HVAC trade but Ive always been interested and looking to get into it so now looking to change careers and get started. I'm basically just looking for any tips for a green new beginner. For example should I seek an apprenticeship or attend a college course. Again entirely new to all this so any advice welcome. Thanks

You would have to start with obtaining a g3 gas license and eventually a g2 gas license, which is a classroom course with very minimal hands on training. There won't be any company willing to start you on an apprenticeship until they at least know you're competent in the field with at least a g3 under your belt. The typical apprenticeships are for air conditioning/refrigeration, and sheet metal that require hours of in the field experience and in class work that's anywhere from 2.5 years (residential licenses) to 5 years (full licenses used in commercial)... Typically longer than that for many companies when there can be downtime in seasons that aren't busy.
