Title: Smart Thermostat
Post by: smanrgrs on January 10, 2022, 01:00:30 PM
hi, just bought smart thermostat and was about to install. When I unplugged my current Rheem EcoNet thermostat, i found out it has different set of wires. They are connected on E1, E2, R, C. I went down and opened up the furnace and they are connected at the same spots on furnace.

Smart thrmostat requires R, W, C, G, Y wires to be present.

What are E1 and E2 terminals? I haven't found any resource giving any explanation on it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

That's a communicating system.  Those are data wires.  You can use those wires connected to terminals E1 and E2 no problem.

What kind of thermostat did you buy?

The problem is most Smart Thermostats will need 5 wires.  The Ecobee offers a PEK adapter and the NEST offers a Power Connector and that will turn the 4 wires into 5.

You could also use your 4 wires and wire R, W1, C and Y1.  Unless you have the PEK or Power Connector you won't be able to wire G to gain fan control, although the furnace will still start the fan when there is a call for heat or cool.  If you like to run the fan continuously just install a jumper between R and G terminals on the furnace.  You probably want to jumper W1 and W2 at the furnace as well as you won't be able to control the heat staging with 4 wires.  Or at least refer to the furnace manual to ensure the staging is setup correctly.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I got Amazon thermostat. Pictures attached. This requires R, W, Y, C, G wires to be connected.

My question would be if I can re-do the wires and install on R,W,Y,C,G terminals on furnace board? Currently they are connected on E1, E2, R and C. Can I disconnect from E1 and E2 and attach to Y and W. I see 5th wire currently not being used which can be attached to G.

And then connect corresponding wires on thermostat.

Will that work?
