Title: Heat Pump & Coil mismatch
Post by: Sergroum on June 09, 2022, 02:42:24 PM
Hello.

Hm. So I have here a 2 ton heat pump. With an inverter compressor and ERVs that offer some form of modulation.  The coveat is that I might be forced to use a 3 ton coil.

Has anyone encountered such a mismatch? What would be happening with such a Frankenstein during cooling and heating.

Back when we chased after government rebates for higher SEER AC's it was common to mismatch coils and install larger coils than the AC in order to increase efficiency.

Do you know what model of heat pump and coil you will use?  I normally check the AHRI website to make sure they are approved,

https://www.ahridirectory.org/

Most manufacturers provide a database to check coil compatibility too.

It's approved by ahri.

What I'm wondering is if it's brains going to get all frazzled while modulating with a coil mismatched to such a great extent.

No worries there.  You may just have to add refrigerant due to the larger coil.

Thank you.  Yeah, Ahri are approving it. I guess we'll confirm on practice :)
