Title: Why do I have two wires running to G in my thermostat?
Post by: baipoll on November 30, 2022, 10:40:43 AM
Looking into installing a Smart Thermostat, but I can't find any reference online to have two wires running to the G port. Did the person who set this up get lazy?

Both the Green and the Orange wire the ones in question

There should only be one wire. What does the orange wire connect to you in the mechanical room?

I added a photo of my unit, would that connect inside the left panel?

EDIT: It looks like the orange is attached to another orange? I added a new photo

Do you have an HRV?  It looks like you have a black wire on the G terminal in the furnace and I suspect somebody has interlocked the HRV incorrectly.  Let me know the model of the HRV and I can tell you how to wire it.

New photos of HRV added, model # is 130ERVD

Is this essentially wired to turn on the HRV when a signal to turn on fan is sent from my thermostat?

You're supposed to have a main control that will control the HRV but I don't see one wired to the HRV.  The interlock terminals are wired and they are intended to start the furnace fan anytime the HRV is turned on by its main control.  Does the HRV ever run?  Do you have a control separate from your thermostat that turns the HRV on?

Nope, no other control in the house other than the thermostat. We're in a new build, it was just finished at the end of September, wouldn't be surprised if they skipped that and hoped no one would notice due to rising costs.

Should I be able to hear the HRV running (if it is?). What a mess!

Well the good news is that should be warranty work and yes, I would call the builder back and ask them where the controller is for the HRV.  You should be able to hear it running. Also, if you look outside the exhaust vent flaps should open when it runs.  You can let them know the HRV interlock wiring is incorrect as well.

So I ended you figuring out that the HRV turns on when the FAN is set to ON, or when the FAN is set to auto AND the heat is on. It must be wired up to come on when the furnace fan is on?

All of this mess just to find out if my Nest thermostat will work with this set up lol

That's sad this is new construction and passed inspection.  The HVAC company should install a main control and correct the interlock wiring.

If you want to use a smart thermostat, the Nest can't control an HRV.  It looks like you have 6 wires at the thermostat so if you got something like an Ecobee with the Pek adapter, you could use 4 of those wires for your heating and cooling and fan control and then the other 2 wires to control the HRV.  Then you can eliminate the interlock wiring as the Ecobee will start the furnace fan anytime the HRV runs
