Title: Type of AC for small house
Post by: Abandonedunit on July 19, 2023, 06:46:38 PM
Hello....have a small house customer wants central air....620 Sq ft......smallest I can get is a 1.5 ton...gonna be too much for space.......then heard to just use a ductless....how good is the AC gonna be in bedrooms?....its got kitchen & living(2 biggest rooms) & 3 smaller bedrooms & 1 small bathroom.....was thinking of a 1 ton ductless w/ Air handler mounted between living/kitchen & the air should get tto bedrooms& bathroom from under the doors(if I have to I'll cut the doors)....house also has a finished basement & a finished garage that at this time the customer doesn't want to cool....(I tried & told him this would use the units capabilities better)basement is also 620sq ft.....what u guys think?

How do they heat this place?  Are you saying you plan to use a ductless AC with an air handler that needs ductwork?

With a ductless system you want heads in each room, other than the bathroom.  That door stays open most of the time.

Otherwise they make some 9000 BTU side discharge AC's you can use with an air handler and ductwork.

Even with undercut doors I don't think if the door is closed it would cool well on a hot day.  We undercut doors when a room has no return air, so that it can communicate with a central return air vent.

In Canada we don't include the basement when sizing AC's.  A sizing rule of thumb is square feet x 10 = btu/hr.

620 x 10 = 6200 BTU's of cooling required.  You need roughly half a ton of cooling, so even with 9000 BTU's of cooling you're probably oversized.

One of the manufacturers I know makes a 1 ton. It's a special order. Maybe Lennox or Carrier. One of them anyway. You'll just need to look into who it is.

Goodman sells Comfortaire side discharge units.  They make 1 ton units but I'm not sure if they still manufacture a 9000 BTU unit.

Im more curious how are you going to circulate the air. Where will the air handler be? Im assuming there is no ductwork.   If air handler in the attic, there will be some extra heat gains.
