Title: question about ductless heat pump and adding heads later
Post by: jsands on March 21, 2025, 08:38:30 PM
Hello everyone,

new to the group. I live in Washington state.

I will be building a small 1000 sq foot house this spring/summer. I'm doing the build myself so its going to take me awhile.

I want to get a ductless heat pump that can run 4 heads (4 zones). I want to be able to run all the line sets in the walls and attic before insulation and sheet rock. BUT, I want to only hook up two heads at first and then add the other 2 heads down the road once that 1/2 of the house is complete.

I was told that this may not be possible because the compressors are sized to run all 4 heads at once and that if I only hook up two of them it will be too much power and it wont work.

I was shopping for a Mitsubishi or Daikin that would allow me to do this.

1. Is this possible?
2. Are there certain models or manufacturers that allow this, and if so, what models/descriptions should I look for?
3. Any other advice or suggestions with this type of approach?

thanks in advance!

Whoever told you that lied to you. The compressor modulates its flow rate with demand. Each head can run independently of the other so different rooms don't have to have cooling or heating when not needed.

thank you for the reply. my HVAC guy is a bit old school. Maybe this was something of old units. Can I hook up the unused line sets to the compressor? Or, should I leave them stubbed out the exterior wall and only hook them up when i go to install the heads too? Perhaps my HVAC guy was thinking the line sets would hold the refrigerant and without having the head unit that would cause an issue.  thank you again!
