Title: Knocking and burning smell
Post by: jennmc31 on July 14, 2008, 10:58:15 PM
My central ac(the unit in the garage) started making a banging noise and was really loud then the air went off. I went in the garage and opened the air filter area and there was some smoke/misty stuff and a rubber burning smell. What could this be? I have had a horrible week and everything expensive that could happen has happened to me this week. I just need some good news. I turned off the inside thermostat and I went out to check just now and there is a humming noise(low) coming from unit. Could this be from my water heater? I had to have it fixed 2 days ago and the tech never switched the breaker back to on. I know they use each other somehow. I can smell that burning rubber smell in the house now. Would it be coming through the vents? Thank you for any info.

Sounds like your condenser fan motor gave up the ghost.  I would just turn the breakers off to the A/C.
