Title: Starting a Gas business in Ontario??
Post by: InCoG on July 07, 2009, 04:23:16 PM
Hello, I've been a licensed G2 tech in Toronto now for about 2 years and I want to start my own Gas Fitter Company but I'm not sure about the steps to do so... I was wondering if someone could lay out the steps regarding business registration, contractor numbers, Insurance, ect... Do I Incorporate my business or not? Do I need some sort of contractor number? Do I need to be insured?  What do I need to do to start a fully legit gas fitting business in Ontario?  Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!!

Visit the Contractor section - Here (http://hvactechgroup.com/index.php?topic=Contractors)

You have to hold a 313A or 313D refrigeration license to register with the OPA, to qualify for their rebates.

Definitely incorporate. If anything does wrong and you get sued to oblivion and you don't shield yourself through a corporation than everything you own personally get taken. That is if you loose the lawsuit. Purchase business insurance too. For something around $1500 annually you can't go wrong.

So what exactly are the steps required to start your own business.  I'm just looking to do a little work on the side here and there, and move in doing my own thing full time when I feel the time is right.

I am in a same boat as you too. I am working currently with the company and planning to stay there. But would like to do some side jobs for friends and family, but also wants to be safe.

If you plan to make less than $30,000 a year doing side jobs you won't need to register for a HST number.  You don't need to register a business with the province as a sole proprietor, if you use your legal name.  You will need to get a TSSA contractor registration number to work on gas.  I would look at getting some liability insurance too.

As soon as you make more than $30,000 you have to start collecting HST, then register for the HST number so you can remit it.

Great thanks for the info. I'll look in to getting just a contractor license and maybe some liability insurance

Does anyone know of any insurance companies that will provide liability insurance for a new hvac business, that wont discriminated against a fella that primarily works on oil fired equipment?

I just got my renewed OCOT certificate, and they sent information on Breckles Insurance (http://brecklesgroup.com/Products-and-Services/Commercial.aspx).

It looks like they give OCOT members extra benefits and preferred rates.
