Title: Union or no union?
Post by: bigg dogg on April 04, 2010, 02:15:26 PM
Some of the guys at our shop are considering getting a union to come into our shop.
Does anyone know the process of getting a union into the workplace?
Is there a minimum number of employes required?
Any info would be great.....cheers

What are your reasons for unionizing?

Mainly because of no pay raises in 5 years.... The company has doubled in size in the last 5 years, moved to a new building to accomidate our growth... Seems to be money for everything else but the employees.. Some kind of pension plan would be nice.

That is unfortunate.  You would be better off finding another employer, rather than being involved in unionizing your shop.

In my opinion unions don't have as much worth today as they did 40 years ago.  I could link you to 100 sites that say unions are bad, and 100 more that say they are good.

Your employer sounds greedy, and it's likely a union would smarten them up.  However if you are a valuable worker, then you should be able to demand a raise or get another job very easily.  You would risk giving yourself a bad name if you tried to bring a union into your workplace.

Try talking to your employer first and explain why you deserve a raise.  I track all my calls, sales, repeat calls ect..  That helps me guage my worth.  In 14 years working in this trade, I have never had an employer offer me a raise, but I have never had an employer refuse me a raise when I asked for one.  I know I'm good at my job, and I know alot of companies would hire me in a second.  For that reason I would never involve myself with a union for "protection".  I would simply move on if I were unhappy.

I hope you get the pay you deserve!
