Title: Exemption Tests
Post by: scarey8 on July 08, 2010, 06:02:47 PM
Got signed up for my 313A apprenticeship, I have to write 3 exams before october when trade school is on the go.  Exemption tests to fast track me as I already have 4500 hours in, what can I expect on the Level 1 and Level 2 apprenticeship tests?  Anyone write them in the past??  Probably just basic stuff I'm assuming but I thought I'd ask.

Someone help me out

If you are currently a 313D residential air conditioning systems mechanic and want to become a 313A refrigeration and air conditioning systems mechanic, then you are correct, you need an additional 4500 hrs.

Quote(3)  Despite subsection (1), in the case of a person who holds a certificate of qualification as a residential air conditioning systems mechanic and who wishes to complete an apprentice training program to become a refrigeration and air conditioning systems mechanic, the apprentice training program shall consist of only three periods as follows:
   1.   One period of 900 hours of classes that provide training and instruction and of on the job work experience.
   2.   Two periods, each of which shall consist of 1800 hours of classes that provide training and instruction and of on the job work experience.  O. Reg. 75/05, s. 4 (3).

I've never heard of seperate apprentiship tests.  As far as I know you could just challenge the 313A, if you have a total of 9000 hrs.  If you're doing an apprenticeship then I don't think you're really fast tracking anything.

I have never written the 313A exam, I can't help you out there.  Don't under estimate it though, I have heard it is alot harder than the 313D.

I would call the Ministry to get the proper paperwork, and to book the exam.  The Ottawa office phone number is 613-731-7100.  Just tell them you need a 313A supervisor's assessment of skill sets document, and you need the competency analysis profile form, to be filled out by your employer.  Then you can skip all the schooling and just challenge the exam.  However I think the schooling portion might really help to pass the 313A.

Good Luck!

your on the ball, I'm a holder of a 313D, met with the apprenticeship board, got signed up, I've never done any formal training with respect the ac or refrigeration.  I'm required to write levels 1 and 2, after passing basic and intermediate exemption tests I will be allowed to go to school for the advanced classes and then complete my remaining two years.  I doubting myself because i'm field and technically smart but when it comes to the books and theory I have had to no training.  I wrote the 313D with no training and obtained 88%, but I was told the 313A is much harder.   looks like i'm gonna fly blind on this one and hope for the best, got the modern refrigeration and air conditioning book, we"ll just have to see how it goes, if anyone has written the level 1 and level 2 313a apprentice exams let me know what I can expect
