Title: noisy condo HVAC system
Post by: condoperson on December 23, 2010, 12:51:52 AM
I moved into a new condo recently...the HVAC system is in the bedroom...the heating blower is very loud..it has 2 vents directly above it which emit the noise from the blower...the ac compressor is even louder...I contacted the builder who said nothing could be done about it...I think he just does not want to spend the money...
Does anyone have any ideas about how to quiet down the HVAC system?  are there quiet blowers / ac compressors out there?
This is driving me crazy as I cannot sleep and use the HVAC system at the same time...I should not have to choose between sleep and staying warm!

I would contact the manufacturer to have a service tech verify the installation.
Is there a gas water heater used for heating or is this an electric system?  Are you living in Ontario?

The fan speeds could be adjusted and you could install a compressor blanket.  If it's a variable speed blower, dip switches need to be set properly.

Talking to the builder about HVAC is always a waste of time.

I am sorry to say you had better get use to the noise. It is trial and error to get rid of sound problems. With noise you hear the loudest sound so you resolve that then the next sound shows up and so on and so on until you have spent a fortune.  It could be easy (got lucky) or it could cost a bundle (you're screwed). I see this all the time. Generals hire the low bidder and install a cheap system. Then they sell the condo to people who don't know or ask until it's too late.   Didn't you run the unit before you closed? Now all the quality professionals get lumped in with low bidder. Another black eye on the HVAC industry.
Hire an independent professional who can analysis your problems. You could get lucky. Maybe a fan speed adjustment or a compressor with shipping bolts tight. After the simple stuff it gets difficult and expense so keep good records. The easiest sound problems are the ones that never happen. Good design and quality cost alot less then solving sound problems.
