Title: 313d challenge
Post by: 99blacksi on March 31, 2011, 10:30:47 PM
Hey guys, I've been in the field for just over 7 years now and definitely have the 4500 hours that are required. I was just told that you can sign an affidavit in the presence of a lawyer saying that I have the proper amount of hours...basically under oath.
Does anyone know if this is true, it comes from a reputable source I just want a second thought on it.

I've never heard anything about a lawyer, that was not the case when I challenged the 313D exam.

You need a licensed mechanic to sign you up as an apprentice, and then write off your 4500 hrs and challenge the exam for $100.  You don't need to signup as an apprentice and then work 4500hrs.  The licensed mechanic can write off hours that you worked on A/C equipment prior to becoming an apprentice.

You have to call the Ministry to get the proper paperwork, and to book the exam.  The Ottawa office phone number is 613-731-7100.  Just tell them you need a residential air conditioning mechanic supervisor's assessment of skill sets document, and you need the competency analysis profile form, to be filled out by your employer.

I went to the ministry office today and they basically said you need more than just the affidavit. So I got all the forms I need to fill out so hopefully I can still do this.
Does anyone what I can do if most of my time working in the field was spent working "under the table". I knew this would come back to bite me in the ass eventually.

You don't need to worry about the Ministry of Revenue, you are dealing with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.  The right hand knoweth not what the left hand doeth.

I posted a scan of the instructions I had for anyone who wants to apply for the 313D certificate, without going through the Apprenticeship program.

You need a letter from your employer, on a company letterhead which give the company address, exact dates of employment, and number of hours worked.  Include the name of the certificate holder who is assessing you.  Your employer should have no problem crediting you with 4500 hours.  Your 313D certificate will benefit him as well.  No one in the MTCU will cross reference you record of employment.  Whether you were working under the table or not, if you have 4500 hours working on air conditioners, then you have every right to challenge the 313D exam.

The certificate holder and employer sign off on the residential air conditioning mechanic supervisor's assessment of skill sets document, and the competency analysis profile form.

Send that to the ministry and wait until they contact you with exam dates.

Don't forget to spend $20 here for the 313D practice exam.

Good Luck!
