Title: Eager to Learn, Looking for some advice.
Post by: jeffio23 on June 05, 2011, 10:31:48 AM
Hello, I had just recently moved to Brockville, Ontario, selling most of my possessions to pay for the move including my car.  I had heard there was more work around this part of Ontario. So I figured since I'm still young I might as well move to the work.  I obtained my gas licensed at a trade school and I'm now looking for a company that is willing to teach me the trade.

I was wondering if there are any suggestions or tips on what to say to a owner or manager to hire you on without any experience.  I'm fully committed to learning the trade I'm just finding it difficult with companies wanting some prior experience.  (Understandably)

I would also like to hear some stories about how you guys got started out in the trade and landed your first job.

Thanks!
Eager to Learn

Go to all the HVAC wholesalers in the area.  They all have job postings there.
You will have to start as a helper doing installations and learn the basics before you start doing service work.
Even though you have your certification, you should take a laborers position to get your foot in.

Good luck!

Go to every gas supplier and start asking questions.  Networking!! If you think you would be valuable to a company, then set up a 3 year plan for your self and use that as reference letter. Look if you make them money then you should make a respectable wage.  You have the paperwork to do the job but your GREEN. You need to prove that you will be capable if not already.
