Read Section 21 of O.Reg 212/01 (http://www.hvactechgroup.com/files/regs/21201.doc).

QuoteRegistration of contractors
?21.  (1)  No person shall act as a contractor unless the person is registered for the purpose.  O. Reg. 212/01, s. 21 (1).
?(2)  An application for registration as a contractor shall be made in the form published by the designated administrative authority to the director and shall be accompanied by the fee set by the designated authority.  O. Reg. 212/01, s. 21 (2).
?(3)  A registration as a contractor expires one year after its date of issue.  O. Reg. 212/01, s. 21 (3).
?(4)  An application to renew a registration made after the registration has expired shall be treated as a new application for registration.  O. Reg. 212/01, s. 21 (4).
?(5)  The director shall issue evidence of registration to an applicant who is registered as a contractor or renews a registration as a contractor.  O. Reg. 212/01, s. 21 (5).
?(6)  The director shall issue a registration or a renewal of a registration as a contractor if the applicant pays the fee set by the designated administrative authority and is not in arrears of any such fees owed to the designated administrative authority.  O. Reg. 212/01, s. 21 (6).
?(7)  A registered contractor shall display the evidence of registration in a conspicuous place at the contractor's business premises and shall notify the director within 30 days of any change of business address, and all field vehicles, other than delivery trucks, operated by the contractor, whether leased or owned, shall be clearly marked with the contractor's name and registration number.  O. Reg. 212/01, s. 21 (7).
?(8)  A registration is not transferable.  O. Reg. 212/01, s. 21 (8).
?(9)  If the name on the registration changes, the holder shall promptly apply to the director for a registration containing the new name and pay the fee set by the designated administrative authority.  O. Reg. 212/01, s. 21 (9).
?(10)  If the evidence of registration is lost, stolen or destroyed, the contractor shall promptly apply to the director for a duplicate and pay the fee set by the designated administrative authority, whereupon the director shall issue duplicate evidence of a valid registration.  O. Reg. 212/01, s. 21 (10)

TSSA changed the process of registering by releasing Order FS 152-09 (http://www.hvactechgroup.com/files/order/fs15209.pdf), which basically forces a compliance audit before registration.

You can download the Contractor Registration Form Here (http://www.hvactechgroup.com/files/TSSA%20Registration.pdf)

You can download the TSSA Fuels Fee Schedule Here (http://www.hvactechgroup.com/article.php/20120528083600311)

I would add a multimeter and flue gas analyzer / calibration certificate to your list of things the inspector might want to see.  I'm not sure if you can't just write your name as business name.  If you plan on registering a business name, I would do that first, in case the name you write down is not available.  It would save you the hassle of having to change your information later on.

The registration form states a fee of $452.41 including HST, this includes the periodic compliance audit, once every 3 years.  The fee schedule still refers to GST, so I imagine it is outdated.  It states you would be subject to a 3.5hr inspection fee, which is 3 payments of $157 plus the $275 registration fee.  That would be a total of $746.  The registration form is newer so I expect you will pay a total of $452.41.

According to O.Reg 212/01, anyone can register as a heating contractor, simply by completing a form and paying a fee.  You aren't required to be certified or have tools, or vehicles ect..  You just have to employ a certificate holder to perform the work.  It's seems really strange to me that TSSA could implement changes to the registration process without having O.Reg 212/01 ammended first.  I do agree performing a compliance audit during registration makes sense though.

I just started my business last January and had my TSSA Compliance Audit, the Inspector said I wouldnt be audited for another 3 years which im fine with, I just got a letter last week saying they had to give me another compliance audit...  The first one I did I actually drove out to see him, he still charged me 2 hours travel and 1 hour for the inspection at 140 bucks an hour...   now In less than a year, during my HARDEST time (as I'm just now starting to get calls comming in) and with all the other bills I have to pay, Business Number, Vehicle/Liability Insurance, Contractor Number, Liscense Renewal, chasing customers for money etc.. etc... this guys gonna come to my place in the boonies.... thats gonna cost me like 3 hours... plus he has to go to 3 jobs ive done and do who knows what?... this has just about pushed me over the edge, I make sure EVERY customer I deal with is very happy and wants to call me back.. so I KNOW its not a customer issue... either they made a mistake or are just getting really greedy...  either way the bill for my contractor number renewal just came in, as well as my phone book renewal bills... and with this audit crap I'm debating just giving it up, has anyone else had 2 audits in less than a year?  I realize TSSA lost government funding a couple years back but do they have to milk the new guys so hard?  Basically i've got no family I need to support, so im wondering why im working so hard for peanuts, on call 24/7 and stressed out all the time...   I keep thinking if I worked at a grocery store with no insurance payments or anything like that i'd be alot happier... Hell I know an old friend from highschool thats been on welfare for YEARS and he seems less stressed and happier than I am....   I love my trade and could deal with all the other bills but this TSSA crap is SERIOUSLY making me sick.  Is there any place in Canada where the TSSA dont have authority? (Fat chance I know) and has ANYONE else been audited Twice in less than a year?... from the quality of work in my area it seems like i'm the ONLY one getting audited...

Now that you have completed work under your registration, the TSSA most likely wants to inspect 3 of your installs, which they pick from 10 address' they ask you to submit.  After that you shouldn't see them for another 3 years.

Your first audit billing seems a little unfair to me.  Hope all goes well.

I finally got a hold of them today, apparently the first one i have to pay for but the ones after that are covered by my contractor fee's.  Just a heads up for new contractors I guess, they will give you an Audit in less than one year of starting up.  If its paid for I dont care, the letter they send even states they wouldnt do it for 3 years unless there was a complaint or issue... but there was no issue... just them deciding to do it early...    The 3 installs from 10 addy's is gonna be hard, since i've only done 2 big installs, all the rest has been cleanings/fixups... whatever though, there the ones coming early.

hey . I'm in the process of getting my tessa number and just needed some info that can help me though it. i have paid the fee and just got a email saying i have to book a inspection and after that if everything passes they will issue the tssa number. i wanted to know if you have any info on what the inspector is looking for in that inspection before they give me the tssa number, because i haven't done any work which is the reason for me to get the tssa number so what exactly are they looking for and is there another inspection after that within the first years?

You revived an old, ancient thread from 2011.

Here's some newer threads about it.
