Need help choosing between heat pump quotes (Canada)
« on: October 22, 2018, 12:14:57 PM »
Hi everyone,

We need to install A/C in our bungalow as last Summer was just way too hot. We currently heat using an electric furnace, so we already have ducts all over the house.

Since we need an A/C, we thought we'd look into getting a heat pump, because the RenoClimat program gives us 650$ if we buy an eligible heat pump and the RénoVert program will give us 20% of what we spend above 2500$.. This would probably offset much of the price difference between a central A/C and a heat pump.

To be eligible, the heat pump needs at least 15 SEER, 12.50 EER and a 7.4 HSPF in region 5 (or 8.5 HSPF in region 4). I will also need to replace my 25 year old furnace to be energy star and eligible for the rebate.

I have had the following quotes so far, I was wondering if anyone has any tips to give me.

hvac company #1 (seemed the most professional, measured current ducts, checked if the airflow will be fine, looked outside where we will put the unit ) :
- York YHE24B21S with ME12BN21 and CF24BXA1 7495$ + taxes , minus credit 15.50 SEER, 12.755 EEER 8.5 HSPF in region 4 so 7.4 in region 5. Operates to -17C.
- York YHM24B21S with MVC12BN21 and CF24BXA1 8520$ +taxes, not eligible for credit due to too low EER. 17.25 SEER, 11.25 EER and 7.45 HSPF in region 5. Operates to -28C, so it should save much more on heating. Warraneed for 10 years parts AND LABOR during this fall promo

hvac Company #2 (intermediate professionalism, looked a bit around and outside);
- Goodman GSZ16 2.5 tons, with AVPTC. 7500+taxes, minus credit. 15 SEER, 12.5 EER, 8.5 HSPF (region4 .. so 7.4 region5) . Operates to -17C. Warranty 10 years part, not labor.

hvac company #3 (came in, looked 1 minute at the furnace room then gave me a quote)
- Lennox 14HPX-030-230 with CBX25MV . 7800+ taxes . I am not sure about performance, but at best it would be 15 SEER, 12.5 EER and 8.5 HSPF in region 4 (so 7.4 in region 5)

I have received quotes from 2 more compagnies. Both were for Amana 16, but they were much more expensiev than the goodman for what appears to be the same product.

My current hunch is to go for the cheap york with the 10 year warranty. I would have loved to get the YHM, but giving up on the credits kills the deal. Stupid EER requirement.

What do you guys think? This is in Quebec City.

I have a pretty good experience with Lennox. Most of the models you mentioned have 10 years warranty on parts. All of them have an option to have 10 years warranty on labour. Keep in mind, to be eligible for it, you need to have a record of maintenance every single year. The company #1 might've forgot to mention that part.

Keep in mind, that the York models quoted to you are all 2 ton units, while the goodman and lennox models are 2.5 tons.
