chemicals in basement / gas appliances

We got as a gift a glass jar (cookie jar sized) with a light socket in it, and a bowl-shaped lid where you put cubes of scented which melts from the heat.  I remember in G3 that chemicals should be kept away from natural draft appliances that use the surrounding for combustion.  Would this smelly wax be a bad thing?
