QuoteCompany Found Selling Unapproved Appliances, Failing to Hold Contractor Registration

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Toronto, ON, January 9, 2018) – Ontario's public safety regulator, the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA), successfully prosecuted natural gas-fueled appliance retailer Kitchen Queen for failing to provide proper contractor registration and for selling unapproved appliances.

The company's owner Mr. Guatam Mashetty, pled guilty to two offences under the Technical Standard and Safety Act, 2000 (TSS Act) for selling appliances with forged CSA approval labels and for operating without a valid TSSA contractor registration.

"Selling gas-fueled appliances under these conditions is negligent and puts many, many members of the public at risk," says John Marshall, Director of TSSA's Fuels Safety Program. "Organizations like TSSA and the CSA exist so that retailers and contractors are held to a higher standard - a standard that takes into account the safety of every person in the province of Ontario and across the country," adds Marshall.

TSSA encourages restaurant operators and operators of natural gas-fueled appliance to be vigilant when it comes to the purchase of appliances for their operations. "Taking that extra step to verify CSA and TSSA certification on equipment takes very little time, but can result in making a major difference when it comes to safety," continued Marshall.
