I am interested in getting epa section 608 certified for refrigerants handling. i am currently 609 certified for automotive work, but I want to work some with small appliances and residential central air. Can anyone tell me if the 608 type 1 is sufficent for central air? From what I have read this ok for ac units to 5lbs. I really don't know a this point what a typical residential refrigerant capacity would be.  Thanks, stiz

I am licensed under the Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Mechanic - Ontario Regulation 75/05.  Here in Ontario, our residential licenses can work up to 5 tons (60,000 BTU).

You might find the answer to your question here, on this EPA Test Page

QuoteThe United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has required that all persons handling refrigerants should be certified. If you are not certified you can't legally buy refrigerants.

EPA-Approved Section 608 certification is needed to service building air conditioning and refrigeration systems. With 608 certification, you can purchase any refrigerant in containers greater than 20 pounds.

Three types of certification are available. The Section 608 Type I, II and III exam can be purchased through one of our local distributors . The 608 Type I exam is also available as an open book exam. Read More

This Section 608 certification sounds alot like our Ozone Depletion Certificate (ODP).  We still need another mechanic's license to actually do the work.  The ODP certificate is only for handling/purchasing refrigerant.  You might need other certification in your area as well.
