Question about my unit

We have a central heat and air. Our compressor went out this past Sunday.  We only have a little over a year left on the warranty for the system.  We don't have the money to fix this one or purchase a new outside unit at this time.
My question is when it becomes cooler, can we still use the heating system for the house? I am thinking that we can without issues. If I am correct,the outside unit is only for air conditioning. Is this correct?
