For me personally i use them exclusively on gas pipe, 1/2 and 3/4"  great for every day use, they grab round pipe the best with no slipping. They are harder to find but worth it. I tried straight and could not stand them.

My favorite for years. The v-jaw is the only style I like

I use these as well.  I've bent a few now using them on 1" gas pipe, but that's me being to lazy to get a pipe wrench.

I have a collection started actually   ;D

I have the Knipex V style like Walker said. So robust and grabs black pipe like no other. Even with some pipe dope in the grooves it just works. And it is easy to adjust once you get used to it.

What's the difference with straight edge and v jaw ?
