Hi everyone,

I am pricing out PVC pipe and have found that Schedule 40, 4 inch PVC pipe is about $500 (CDN) for a 20 foot length. This seems extreme!! Can any Canadians here comment on this? Do I really need Schedule 40? Can I use a thinner wall pipe? After all, we're only moving air, not high pressure water. In Canada, we're allowed to install the fan in the basement, and then pipe it outdoors. Why so heavy a pipe? Thanks...

What product did you price out and what are you using it for?

IPEX makes 636 PVC and 4" costs around $120 + HST per 10' length.  Home Dept sells 2" x 10' for $28 + HST, and 3" for $59 + HST.

Hi,

I would be using the pipe for a sub-slab radon vent system. I don't see why it has to be Schedule 40. I've read this in some of the specs for radon mitigation systems. Schedule 40 is basically bullet-proof. For relatively low pressure air flow, I would assume a schedule 10 would be adequate. What's more critical is sealing of the joints, correct? Thanks...
