When you have a nice new can it's really runny and messy. Make certain you do a really good job shaking the can as a new can will come out darker and not glue nearly as well if it's not properly mixed. It will still be just as runny. What I do is wipe off as much as I can off the dabber to the inside of the can before I even begin gluing any of my joints. I try not to get it too gooey on the male end since I know it will push back into a nice mess around the edge of the fitting.
Make sure you deburr your 636. The vast majority of guys I know think it's a waste of time, but it's really important and does make our life easier. Especially when putting 3" or larger 636 together.

go the extra mile and chamfer the pipe,  deburring is only half the battle.

Use the Reed DEB4 deburring tool and their pipe cutter. You can get the Reed 636 solutions kit that has both.
