Hey everyone,

I have a very basic question that I feel silly asking people in the field. I am about to write my G2 exam. With this certificate I can work on and install 400k btu appliances, but I do not understand the process involved with actually doing the work.

If I were to say install a new appliance in an existing house that already has gas service. Do I need to get an inspection? Who does this inspection, tssa or Enbridge? Do I have to get permission from either before I actually install anything?

Also I would not have a contractor registration number so can I legally do the work on my own anyways?

I have been in and around the industry for quite some time but I have never been a part of the paperwork side of things.

Any help to clarify the process from start to finish would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks!

You're right now asking people in the field, so continue feeling silly. You only need an inspection from the gas company on a brand new install where you're connecting to the new gas meter. It would be through the gas company and not TSSA. You wouldn't need permission ahead of time, you just call them up after the equipment is installed. If you're on the residential side of things, there's nothing really for TSSA to inspect. In commercial, we sometimes get custom designed/built systems that require a TSSA inspection to be approved for use.

If you're working for yourself, you do need a contractor registration number to do any gas work. I'm sure you also need business insurance.
