Hi Group!

I am in the process of getting quotes for a new heat pump, unfortunately, my compressor shorted to ground and it used R-22.

In the process of getting quotes, a company came out today and claimed that I would need more ductwork installed and that the "NEW" heat pumps (I'm getting a 2.5 ton, 14 seer) would die within a year as the ductwork is not adequate for the new units.

The unit that finally went lasted 20 years and was an AMANA.

Does this sound correct or are they just trying to get more money out of me?  Why would my Amana unit last 20 years if I did not have enough ductwork?  The sales man wanted to install more ductwork in my master bedroom closet...

Any thoughts?  Does this even make sense in that do new Heat Pumps draw more air?
Thanks!

If the new coil fits in the existing plenum, I would see no reason to modify ductwork in other rooms, if you have had no issues.  If the old heat pump was also 2.5 ton the existing furnace / air handler should still be moving the same amount of air.

While yes, the sales is likely over exaggerating a bit (or a lot).  Don't just discount his words.  His suggestion might be irrelevant to the units lifespan, but relevant to your comfort.  Perhaps the bedroom in question is lacking return air and it's air circulation is really crappy.

my point is, while not vitally necessary, it might still be a good idea.

Price vs Function is a factor though.  So if the price difference borders on insane, it's probably not a "must have" type of thing.
