I think u need registration with TSSA. Liability insurance and the business registration. Then u can do work officially.I am also looking into it.I am aware of the TSSA fees etc,but not sure about where to get the liability insurance and for how much?

walker

Is the insurance mandatory though?

also as a related question, a friends parent of mine purchased his own furnace and wants me to install it, am I able to install this furnace legally as long as I'm not receiving any monetary benefit??

Business / HST registration, Business insurance, TSSA registration (Contractor Registration & G1/G2 Certification), WSIB Registration, College of Trades (Employer & Journeyman Fees).

I'm not sure if there would be exemptions if your earned below a certain ammount per year.  I think if we did things legally they wouldn't be called sidejobs  :D

You can visit the Contractor Registration section - Here

Wow that's a lot of stuff to just do a few side jobs here and there.

Not to mention, your employer is probably not going to be thrilled with you using their truck to do work other than for them. If you worked for me, I'd fire your ass.

i've been reeading into the contractors registration, and what I don't get is they will come inspect jobs you've done when you're in the pre-registration phase, but how would have I done any jobs without having a contractors license already, isnt that a catch 22??

also anyone know the exact code on me installing a furnace for a friend for free, is this legal?

The TSSA may want to inspect work you've done under someone else's registration number before they issue you your own.

Your friend can install his own furnace if he owns a dettached house.  As the certificate holder you would have to activate it and leave your test tag.  Without a contractor registration number you can't really complete the test tag.

The work around would be to call Enbridge for an inspection and let them activate it.  In this case the furnace is "installed by homeowner" and no registration number would be required.
