Hello

I am wondering how you obtain a 313A or 313D license in Ontario, without having to go to College for all the courses how and where in the Niagara Region, Ontario, Canada do you write the exam for this license?  We have been working directly in the trade for over 15 years, so the 9000 apprenticeship hours are more than covered, without this license and now we want to offer the rebates and found out we need this license.

Thanks

Find the closest MTCU office near you by visiting the MTCU apprenticeship offices in Ontario page - Here

You can see what paperwork was required to challenge the exam - Here.

I attached the last instructions I had for challenging the exam.  Let me know if things have changed.

I'm not 100% sure how things work now that the College of Trades is involved.

I will contact them and post what I find.

Thanks

Throughout all of my investigations into Challenging the 313 license I have found out quite a bit of information that maybe useful to others.

The 313D is the "RESIDENTIAL AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS MECHANICS" and requires only 4500 hours of on the job training.  There are limitations with this license such as you are only allowed to work on Residential Family Dwellings; work on systems that operate at no more than 240V single-phase power, with a maximum branch circuit capacity of 60 amps, and a maximum cooling capacity of five tons (60,000 BTUs).

The 313A is the "REFRIGERATION AND AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS MECHANICS" and requires 9000 hours of on the job training.  With this license you are allowed to work on all cooling or heating-cooling combination systems that are installed and used in residential, industrial, commercial or institutional settings.

The exams cost $150.00 plus HST and if you fail you have to wait 3 weeks to re-write it.  As well if you challenge the 313D license you cannot use the same 4500 hours of work to obtain a 313A, you will need to work an additional 9000 hours (about 4-5 years) before you can challenge the 313A license and you will need to become a member of the Ontario College of Trades.

Hope this helps everyone.

I'm assuming you mean you cannot use the same 4500 hours of the 313D to minus it from the 9000 hours to challenge a 313A? That certainly does suck. But I guess the 313A is no joke.

hungquang1980

so do you have to fill any form, and where are they how i can find them

I have been in the trade now for almost 4 years. I completed the three year HVAC Technology program at Humber college. I was wondering if, to be eligible to write the 313d exam I need to show proof that I have worked under a person who has 313d/a or is the 4500 hrs sufficient.
Thank you

If you're not registered as an apprentice to get the hours, you definitely need someone to vouch for all those hours of experience being under their wing in order to challenge it. Remember, that's 9000 for the 313A and 4500 for the 313D.

jiggy

Thanks porcupine puffer.
I'm not registered as an apprentice, but the companies I have worked for are willing to vouch for the hours I have worked doing the related job but the current company I'm working for does not have anyone with the 313d/a license. So does that mean I can't use those hours? Even though I have been working on heat pumps n ac'S.
Thank you very much for your feedback

Porcupinepuffer

It should have clarified it has to be someone licensed with a 313d, or 313a in order for the college of trades to recognize the hours. If not, any information you give them about the experience you have with a/c's and heat pumps is not only not recognized, they consider it illegal from their point of view.
How could there not be at least one person with that license? Lots of guys around here have it.

Admin

The licensed person who signed off on my hours didn't work for the same company I did.  In fact I never met the person.  My boss at the time pulled some strings I guess.

What do you guys with more experience think I should do. I want to get the 313d license, that way I wont have to worry and work. I have worked for almost 4 years now plus the 3 years of school. Should I try and sign up as a new apprentice or does any of my previous experience help at all. I am so confused. Any advice is greatly appreciated, I just want to do it the right way .

What kind of company are you working for that does A/C & Heat Pump work, yet no one there has their license??

jiggy

Its a small company, and there are two senior guys both with g1's and in their fifties and sixties. I guess you didn't need the residential license back then I don't know. I have been with them a little over a year now. Before this I was working at another company who had a couple of licensed guys, but work started getting scarce. So I had to look for something else so I could pay my bills and my student loan. Before that, I had just finished college so I took whatever job I was given.

Viperi

thanks i will def get the practise exam. is there any other school i can go to do it? seems like himark only offers it twice a year in toronto. once in march other in november. would like to get it sooner

bster352

Jiggy...if your previous company had guys with licenses and you did your hours there, get their license number and have them sign off on ALL your hours if they would be so kind. As for the company you are working for now, I don't think you will be able to use those hours.

Hi Guys, I am new on this forum and am just starting out in the trade. I want to get my 313D for sure, maybe my 313A if I can. By reading this thread, I am correct in assuming that I can work the required hours under a licensed trades person, get a letter from this person stating I completed the hours and challenge the test to get my certification without having to go through school?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Weeds.

Yes sir. There's some information on the OCOT site here,

http://www.collegeoftrades.ca/resources/exam-process

You have to find an employer (sponsor) and signup with the MTCU and they will work with the OCOT to get you an apprentice certificate for the 313D.

You are eligible to take the C of Q examination for your trade if:
- have a Certificate of Apprenticeship for your trade; or
- You have applied for the Journeypersons Class and your Trade Equivalency Assessment application has been approved.
