I know 1 or 2 people on this site personally but not sure who is who.  I am a former Direct Energy/Enbridge service tech and before that sub.  I took a severance a few months ago when they were going to lay off some of the younger guys and opened up my own shop.  My only real concern at the moment other than money ;) is that I only have a couple years experience on A/C's and I would like to get some more practical hands on training.  I remember all to well the subbing days 13 years ago scraping by because doing service with a months experience was a bitch and calls were taking too long and costing time and money.  I am just curious if anyone knows of any decent coarses in the Ottawa area to be taken,  I will probably be going for factory training at Bryant some time in the future but until then would like to find something local.  Any ideas would be welcome.  I just think that I was lucky a lot the last 2 years finding leaks too easily and only having a few a/c's with pressure problems(lol the best was an italian guy nonono sonofabitch I tell you it just needs to be topped up each year it burns it off....way way overcharged)

p.s my old texts all got ruined when basement flooded in my old house, was good toilet reading.

Send the "admin" an email and he might be able to help you. Challenging the CFQ might be the easiest and quickest way but in the long run your cutting yourself short for learning the basics like you would in the apprentiship programme.

I agree the best schooling would be done thru an apprentiship.  It can be a lenghty process though.  If you already had the required 4500 hrs I would just spend the $100 and challenge the 313D.

I worked for a smaller new business this summer and found that 90% of the calls were electrical.  If the problem was refrigerant related and the unit was over 10 years old I would just present the age vs repair senario.  It's and easy sell given the rebates that are now available to upgrade vs the cost for repairing a leak or replacing a coil.

I have had my 313 for 2 years, now that I am on my own though there is not much in the way of backup if I get stuck.  Last year my first 5 calls were all pressure related lol and although I did all right now that I am on my own I am looking for ways to get more training.  I will probably go south for the Bryant training at the least.

It is my understanding that once you have your 313D ticket, you can register at trade school for the basic and second course (Not yet scheduled) anytime you want to.  Have a guy from work who went to Ottawa for the basic,, he is waiting for the second one as we speak.  Call Apprenticeship office and ask some questions.
