A new apprenticeship program for Gas Technicians (636G) is now in place with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and University (MTCU).

As a prerequisite for registration, a potential Gas Technician apprentice must have successfully completed a TSSA Fuels Safety Workshop and be issued a Gas Technician in Training (G2-T) certificate or already hold a Gas Technician 3 (G3) certificate.

Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship training a Certificate of Apprenticeship (C of A) will be issued by MTCU. The C of A holder may then apply to TSSA for examination and certification as a Gas Technician 2.

As a holder of a G2 certificate you may install, inspect, alter, purge, activate, repair, service or remove gas-fired equipment that has an input of 400,000 BTUH or less and the equipment and accessories essential to its operation.

To learn more about the apprenticeship program or to arrange a meeting with an Employment and Training Consultant, contact a MTCU apprenticeship office. For a location nearest you, visit MTCU's website at http://www.findhelp.ca/mtcu/appoff.html.

Sounds like more hands in the cookie jar to me. So the TSSA is still holding the gas tickets and not the MTCU. So as a trade we are still not a C of Q trade.

as a holder of a g2 licence will people already holding the licence get grandfathered in? i hope we dont have to go to school for the apprenticeship!!

That won't happen, we were G2's before this and we won't have to do any testing.
I do wish it was a C of Q trade though, i'd love another plague on the wall  ;D (well after I pass my 313d)

Yes, I agree with 99Blacksi.  Exisiting G2 certificate holders will not be affected.  I believe this will only apply to G3 / G2-T certificate holders.

What is a G2-T certificate? What is the difference with that and the G2?

Admin

G2-T stands for temporary I believe.

Although the new designation has not been added to Ontario Regulation 215/01 I suspect it is the same as a G3 certificate.

Anyone know where the Fuels Safety Workshop is available for the G2-T?  Looking to do the 636G, but can not find this workshop anywhere.

You can download the Policies & Procedures 636G Apprenticeship Document - Here

You have to register as an apprentice with the MTCU then contact the TSSA and signup for the 30 hour Fuels Safety Workshop.  They will provide you with a training provider in your area.

Registration is no problem, and I have the document you outlined, read it through.

I contacted TSSA and got this response:

"TSSA has completed its portion of the work on the 636G Apprenticeship program, but the program is actually administrated by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) and the new Ontario College of Trades (OCOT). None of the Training Providers that I have spoken to have been approved by MTCU to offer the course as of this date. The only resource available to actually answer your questions regarding the apprenticeship is the MTCU."

Contacted MTCU and they have not gotten back to me yet, but I get the impression they do not even seem to really know about the 636G yet.

There seems to be a conflict between the TSSA's answer and what is printed in the TSSA's 636G Apprenticeship Document.
QuoteNone of the Training Providers that I have spoken to have been approved by MTCU to offer the course as of this date.

See Pg. 4
QuotePrior to commencing work in the field under the direct supervision of a journeyperson, the 636G candidate must complete a Fuels Safety Workshop and be issued a "Gas Technician in Training" (G2-T) certification by TSSA, or already hold a Gas Technician 3 (G3).

See Pg. 8
Quote1. Attend a Safety Workshop conducted by a TSSA approved Training Provider to obtain a G2-T or have a current G3 certificate.

If you look at Section 3 of Ontario Regulation 215/01 you'll see that the G2-T certificate does not exist.  Until O.Reg 215/01 is amended I don't think there's anyone who could even issue you the G2-T certificate.

That's frustrating.  I don't see the point in having a G3 system with the TSSA and then also have a G2-T system with the MTCU.

OK Got bounced back to TSSA who are actually responsible for the fuels safety workshop.  They are in the process of sending me a list of training providers. The TSSA website should also be updated soon with this list.

Good work!  I'm curious to see if they amend O.Reg 215/01 to include the G2-T certificate.  Maybe this certification will actually be issued by the MTCU as a Certificate of Qualification.

TSSA website has been updated.  There are only three training providers listed currently.

Well I got my G2-T and was able to register as an apprentice with MTCU.  I'm pretty sure I am the very first 636G apprentice :-)
