Starting a career in HVAC?

Hey guys i really want to get into the HVAC field but am unsure how to get started. I love working with my hands and fixing things and have been working as an auto mechanic for a few years. I applied for an apprenticeship at the Local 787 and was invited for testing. I took the test which was extremely difficult and was not called back. I was also looking at the Ontario website for per-apprenticeship programs. Im not sure how to get started and would appreciate any guidance that you guys could give me. Also for those who have been working in the field would you recommend it as a good career?
