R22 Start Up in the Winter

We have been experiencing a problem with 2 coolers having difficulty during start up in the winter. They both have pressure sensors on them and crankcase heaters.

What we are finding is that when the temps get below 20°F and under, the system thinks it is empty and won't start up. But if you set the pressure sensor too low, you run into problems there as well.

We've been discussing options as far as changing out the pressure sensors for timers and adding another heater to the receiver.

Wondering if anyone else has had this problem and found a viable solution.

Change the control system to run on a thermostat and use the LP control as a safety only. You may have to add a defrost timer if coil builds up too much frost.
