Newmac Wood/Electric Furnace - smoke and smoke smell from vents
« on: October 07, 2011, 08:06:10 PM »
Hello, I fired up my freshly cleaned wood furnace for the first time this year and for some reason smoke is coming from the vents! Never has happened before. Im not sure of the inner workings of this furnace so Im not sure how the smoke is getting from the firebox into the plenum for the ducting....HELP!

It's possible the firebox is cracked and letting the flue products into your supply air.  Also have the chimney inspected and cleaned if necessary.  Open a door or window, see if that stops a possible downdrafting issue.  Have you recently insulated or replaced windows?  Upgraded exhaust fans?

I would call someone when you're facing possible CO exposure, just to be safe.

Hmm, the chimney was cleaned recently. Is it possible that if the temperature outside was fairly mild and the wood was particularly smoky, that there would not be enough draft which would cause this issue?
