Hey guys, does any one know if teflon (NG) tape can only be used for pipe sizes up to and including 1".  Someone in class mentioned it yesterday and it was the first I have heard of it.

Code book says nothing about size of pipe.  Just not to apply to first two threads.

I've never heard of it having a limit to pipe diameter. As far as I know, any approved NG teflon tape can go on any threaded fittings that would otherwise require pipe dope... Personally, I've never used it when it's easier to just use the dope. I think most guys feel the same way. Which is why 99.99% of threaded fittings don't have teflon tape.

I find the tape to be way easier than using dope.  dope is messy and a pain to keep on you, it's easy to keep a teflon roll sitting in my bag at all times.

I spoke with the Masters rep today and they indicated that some brands of Teflon tape are rated for up to 1.5" pipe but theirs have been certified for up to 3".

6.9.2
Piping of NPS 2-1/2 and over shall have welded pipe joints.

Yeah. I'm confused. How can it be certified for up to 3 inches, when even dope is not certified for 3 inches?  Could that certification relate to water pipes instead?

G.P.

That is what I am thinking.  Up to 2" for NG and as it is multi purpose, maybe up to 3 for Hydronics or steam?

Perhaps different gas codes in other countries allow threading above 2".  OF up to 3 inches so it can be used for other applications

That would be my guess.
