Good Afternoon guys,

I hope all of you are doing well. I had a question If you can answer, I am currenty going for business major in GTA area but have kind of changed my mind to go into HVAC instead. Is there anyway I can skip HVAC schooling and just take G3 exam and ODP license? If I pass, can I go into this field? I have had some experince relating to this field  in the U.S and actually have taken school for it also (600 hr HVAC certificate) and currently hold proper licenses (EPA 608 Certificate). Please, let me know. Thank you for your help.

Best,

There are 7 week classes offered for the test which I can take to prepare. If I pass I could work under someone right? If I have ODP license I can also work under someone doing refrigeration right? Thank paji.

ODP allows you to buy refrigerant. It doesn't even allow you to work with it.

We have a separate license for working on AC called the 313D for residential and 313A for commercial. It's not a written test like the EPA license. It's an apprenticeship. You might be able to challenge it depending on how much field time you can get accounted for. I think the residential is 2500 hours and the commercial is 5000 hours.

as far as i have learned the previous poster is correct. an employer may want an odp. but simply for you to be able to purchase refrigerant for a job. i go to school with (for my g2 at this point) with a few g3 students who have been in the field and working for years.

getting your g3 is a great start and will cost you far less financially via schooling or similar approaches to get into the field. im paying closer to 8000 for both.......

i was told 7 years ago to just get my g3 for the lower cost and get into the field and go from there.

this isnt a guide or a how to. but that is the best info i can give from my position. ..... from what i have seen at my school... the g3 only , jump into the field approach seems to make the most sense.. but i really dont know.. gl!

Just some clarification regarding ODP and 313A  and 313D
ODP allows the holder to purchase and transport refrigerants ONLY.

The hours required for the 313 D are 4,500.
The hours required for the 313A  are 9,500.
